A coat of arms is surprisingly complex. Though the term is often used interchangeably with “crest”, the latter is actually just one part of the design: the imagery above a helmet on the coat of arms. The full coat of arms consists of the crest, helmet, decorated shield, motto and mantle, decorative elements all brought together to form the vision of familial identity. A lot of thought goes into the symbolism of the design and even more detailed work to render the image by hand.

We see that labor of love here in a heavy antique 18K yellow gold signet ring with an engraved intaglio of a heraldic coat of arms. The shield depicts the sun and two birds above lapping waves. There’s a nice patina and brushed finish on the tapering band. 

This ring is in great antique condition with light signs of wear commensurate with age. It is presently finger size 11 and can be resized.
