Diamond Earrings with Coach Covers
Diamond Earrings with Coach Covers
While these 18K gold and 1.40ctw bright white diamond earrings are spectacular, it’s their accessories that make them extra special. The original owner of these c. 1890 earrings would have worn them to parties and other social gatherings, and would have traveled by horse drawn buggy or coach. Fearful of theft on the journey, she took advantage of a popular late 19th century solution: coach covers. These ornamented gold spheres, a mechanism patented in 1878, were designed to hide the sparkle of diamonds, and would be removed upon arrival. These coach covers have managed to stay with their original diamond inserts, which they echo in design: the covers are 18K yellow gold, like the earwires, and their rose gold detailing matches the diamond settings. Use them for their original protective purpose, or keep them on for a totally different look!
These earrings and coach covers are in very good antique condition. The earrings measure approx. 1 inch.
