Antique Shakudo Locket

$5,800.00

This shakudo locket is a window into a world of calm – on either side of the locket a bird rests amid the multicolored foliage against a dark background. This type of Japanese metalwork is called shakudo and is generally composed of 10% gold and 90% copper. It was traditionally used in sword making and weaponry accent pieces until the late 19th century reforms that gradually outlawed samurai culture. Shakudo artisans began making jewelry and decorative objects instead, and the result was the likes of this pendant. It is enclosed in a 14 karat rosy gold frame and has space on the interior for two photos – currently occupied by a father with his son, and a beloved pup.

This pendant is in excellent antique condition. Made c. 1870 – 1890, and measures 1.75” long by 0.975” wide. A variety of gold chains are available separately for purchase.
