Victorian Ruby and Diamond Necklace
Victorian Ruby and Diamond Necklace
We absolutely adore this Victorian silver on 18K yellow gold necklace for both its beauty and its workmanship. The pendant takes the form of a wreath of delicate branches, set with approx. 1.98ctw worth of diamonds, surrounding a fully saturated red ruby weighing approx. 1.20 carats by formula. The diamonds are set in silver and the ruby in gold, as typical of the period; likewise, the body and underside of the pendant are gold, protecting skin and clothing from coming into contact with any tarnish. Echoing this mix of metals, the necklace’s delicate 16 ½ inch chain is made of alternating sections of gold and silver links. We are delighted that the piece has come to us in its original fitted box, identifying its maker as Glasgow, Scotland’s Muir & Sons. The firm was active at the listed address from 1851-1901, which is quite fitting for the materials and aesthetic of the piece.
This necklace is in excellent antique condition.
