Rococo-Revival Carved Onyx Shell
Rococo-Revival Carved Onyx Shell
This stunning pendant is a wonderful testament to the craftsmanship of nineteenth-century jewelers. A piece of onyx has been carved as a scallop shell, the stone’s natural banding utilized to frame a pearl drop that is suspended over the shell’s center. A border of silver-set rose cut diamonds frames the shell, which dangles from diamond-studded links and scrollwork. The pendant dates c. 1870, and measures 2 ¼ inches in length and 1 ¼ inches in width. It comes with a vintage 14k white gold and pearl chain measuring 16 inches in length.
This pendant is in excellent antique condition. It was once part of a larger watch pin, as evidenced by gold findings on the back of the shell.
