Victorian Locket with Miniature Portrait
Victorian Locket with Miniature Portrait
A c.1860s locket that is hand engraved on both sides – but each is different. On one side are leaves and berries, and on the other are flowers in full bloom, both a sign of the Romantic sensibilities of the time. On the interior holds a detailed miniature portrait of a woman. She wears an ornate lace and blue satin gown and has fully bloomed flowers in her hair. The best part is perhaps her jewels, which require magnification to see clearly - a pendant framed in sapphires and pearls strung on a fashionable velvet cord and a cabochon sapphire pin in her hair. This locket is a jewel which by its style and its hidden portrait provides us modern folk with a rare glimpse into another time.
This locket is in excellent antique condition. It is made in 18 karat gold and measures 2.0” long including the bale and 1.25” wide. A variety of chains are available separately for purchase.
