Berlin Iron Chain
Berlin Iron Chain
Berlin Iron jewelry has a rich history, famously as the replacement jewels given to those patriotic women who traded in their gold and silver jewels to the Berlin Iron Foundry to help the government fund their defense against Napoleon’s invasion. Yes for real, the Prussian Royal family asked all their citizens to donate their fine jewelry towards the uprising against Napoleon during the War of Liberation. In return, these folks were given Iron jewelry often with the inscription Gold gab ich für Eisen (I gave gold for iron). Overnight this jewelry became a symbol of wealth and loyalty.
Even beyond the Napoleonic wars iron jewelry was a trend in Europe throughout the mid-19th century. This Berlin Iron necklace gives chills with its striking link design, smooth feel, bold blackened finish and the quintessentially Georgian hand clasp whose grasp brings the look full circle. A truly special collector’s item with a deep history, an unforgettable look and timeless wearability. Made c.1815
