Paired Castellani Bracelets

In the annals of nineteenth century jewelry, few firms are as esteemed and influential as Rome’s legendary Castellani. Their primary inspiration was the jewelry of the ancient Etruscans, excavated in the early-mid nineteenth century and immediately prized for its stunning design and craftsmanship. Castellani’s genius in recreating and reinterpreting these styles and techniques jumpstarted the Etruscan Revival movement and hugely impacted jewelry for the rest of the century (and beyond). These signed bangles—a matched pair, characteristic of the time—are a stunning example of Etruscan Revival style and of Castellani’s brilliance.

Slim, nearly circular hinged ovals of 15K yellow gold, they feature the most important element of the Etruscan style: elaborate designs created with tiny beads of gold and granulated wire. The lovely swirling pattern on these bangles is beautifully framed by a border of black enamel at top and bottom, and edged with more granulated wire. They close with a hidden clasp and safety chain, and interior labels indicate they were made in 1890. Wear them stacked or, in nineteenth century fashion, with one on each wrist.

These bracelets are in excellent antique condition and fit up to a 7½ inch wrist.
