This weekend marks the third Sunday in June: the date our nation has officially set aside to celebrate the hard work and dedication dear old dads.

Washington was the first state to have an official Father’s Day way back in 1910, after a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd lobbied to get the holiday instated. You see, Mother’s Day -- though it did not become an official national holiday until 1914 -- had been kind of a big deal since the 1860s. Dodd was one of six children raised by a widower father, and thought it only fair that men like her dad should get their own special day of recognition. After decades of unofficial acknowledgement, in 1972 President Richard Nixon finally added Father’s Day to the list of federal holidays.
