September is once again upon us, which means it’s time to celebrate sapphires!
One of the more famous sapphires of our own time lives in the engagement ring of Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.
The 18 carat gem was originally selected in 1981 by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, on the occasion of her engagement to Prince Charles.
The ring was considered a bit of a scandalous choice because it was part of the jeweler Garrard’s regular inventory (how common!). But Lady Di rocked it anyhow, and continued to wear the ring even after her divorce from the prince.
When William and Kate became engaged, the groom-to-be decided his mother’s ring was just the thing to seal their betrothal. The sapphire, diamond and white gold jewel instantly became recognized the world over as a symbol of royal romance (again).
