Amethyst is the much-coveted purple variety of quartz, which appears in shades ranging from deep reddish violet to pale lilac. It has been prized for its beauty and magical properties since ancient times.
The color of amethyst has long garnered associations with wine, and it was believe that placing an amethyst under the tongue protected a man from drunkenness. Pliny the Elder did not believe that amethysts were helpful in avoiding intoxication, but did note that if the stone was hung on the neck using peacock and swallow feathers, it would protect the wearer from evil sorcerers.
It was also thought that when placed under a pillow, an amethyst creates pleasant dreams, and when worn regularly has the ability to cure gout and curb anger management issues.
